Brown lead an group of men from Maryland to Virginia to capture the United States arsenal. When they arrived they captured the town and they gathered many hostages. They had failed to stop the B&O railroad train that once it left the town and reached Baltimore, the siren was alarmed. They were ultimately unsuccessful because they failed to isolate the incident and they got caught by federal forces. Although the rebeliion was unsuccessful, it raised tensions between the North and South drawing fine lines between abolitionist and pro-slavery advocates.

John Brown lef a group of 18 followers to Harpers Ferry, Virginia to seize control of a military arsenal on October 16, 1859. He was thwarted by citizens, local militial companies, and United States troops under the command of Robert E. Lee. Ten of his men were killed, and then Brown surrendered. He was put on trial, found guilty for treason against the state, and was hung with 6 of his men.

He was born in Connecticut in 1800 and he was raised by very religious and anti-slavery parents. Sometime between 1820 and 1855 he discovered his distinctive vision of abolition. He believed slavery was unjustifiable and that it was a state of war conducted by one group of people against another. He also believed that violence in a rightious cause was a holy act.

  • Federick Douglas - a free African American whos speeches inspired his movement
  • His parents - they raised him in a very religious and anti-slavery environment which made him feel this way and act in the way he did

On October 16th, 1859 strong abolitionist, John Brown and 21 men, made an attempt to overpower the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry, VA. He hoped that by capturing the arsenal it would begin a slave rebellion and the arsenal would be able to supply those slaves with weapons. He realized very quickly that no slaves were arriving for the rebellion. He was brought down by militias from surrounding towns led by Robert E. Lee. He was captured and tried in a Virginia Court and was found guilty. He was then hung along with several of his followers, including two of his sons.

The significance of this event was that it worsened the situation between the North and the South because it caused the South to feel insecure and begin preparing forces that could defend themselves against the North if they were attacked. They thought Brown was under orders from the North and that his actions were funded by them, so they started to hate the North and felt betrayed, so the tensions worsened between them.
